THE BAILIFF OF JERSEY – MICHAEL CAMERON ST.JOHN BIRT

Michael Cameron St.John Birt

Born in 1948, Michael Birt was educated at St Michael’s Preparatory School, Jersey before attending Marlborough College in Wiltshire. Between 1966 and 1969 he attended Magdalene College, Cambridge where he achieved his MA Law.

He was called to the English Bar in 1970 following the pupillage he gained with Donald Rattee at Lincoln’s Inn and then Desmond Fennell in Temple.

He practiced as a barrister from 2 Crown Office Row, Temple until 1975. In 1976 he joined Ogier & Le Cornu in Jersey and qualified as a Jersey Advocate in October 1977. From there he was appointed a Crown Advocate in 1987. He remained in private practice with Ogier & Le Cornu until December 1993 where he undertook commercial and trust work as well as litigation.

He was sworn in as Attorney General for Jersey in January 1994 and appointed a QC in 1995, before becoming Deputy Bailiff in February 2000. He was sworn is as Bailiff on 9 July 2009.
