Sentencing of Morag and Anthony Jordan

On 6 January at the Royal Court of Jersey, Morag and Anthony Jordan, both 62, from Kirriemuir, Angus, were sentenced to periods of imprisonment of nine months and six months respectively.

They were convicted of common assault on children who were residents at the premises known as Haut de la Garenne in the Parish of St Martin in Jersey.

The offences were committed against children between eight and 16 years of age on various dates between October 1981 and December 1984.

Morgan Jordan, who worked at the children’s home between 1970 and 1984, was convicted of assaults including pushing a child’s face into urine-soaked sheets after the child wet the bed, and striking other children with her hand and a wooden shoe. Her husband was convicted of striking children with a metal spoon, a knife and his hand.

Morag Jordan was acquitted of a further 28 counts and her husband of a further four. They were sentenced by Judge Sir Christopher Pitchers and an Inferior Number of Jurats.

Gordon Claude Wateridge – New trial date

News Update – New Trial Date
The trial of Attorney General - vs - Gordon Claude Wateridge which was scheduled to begin in the Royal Court, St Helier on 20 April was adjourned. The trial is now due to begin on Monday 10 August, 2009.

Mr Wateridge, faces various counts of indecent assault, one count of assault and one count of incitement to indecent assault.

Indictments of Wateridge and Aubin in October 2008

Indictments in the Royal Court – 24 October 2008

On 24 October, the Royal Court of Jersey heard the indictments of Michael Aubin and Gordon Claude Wateridge. The defendants are not co-accused.

The counts read out against each defendant are summarised below and were correct as of that date.

Mr Aubin:
• Procuring an act of gross indecency (2 Counts);
• Sodomy (2 Counts);
• Indecent assault (6 Counts).
Mr Aubin was remanded in custody until 26 November 2008 for a Plea and Directions hearing.

Mr Wateridge:
• Indecent assault (15 Counts);
• Assault (1 Count);
• Incitement to indecent assault (1 Count).

Mr Wateridge pleaded not guilty to all counts. He was remanded on bail until 25th November 2008 for a Directions hearing, and a trial date of 20 April 2009 was set.
